O crystal ball tell me what is neo doing now?

Our fascinations with crystal balls, magic mirrors and other such “see –thru-time and space” devices are endless. These devices somehow show us our future or the things happening to our friends and family in present time. The reasons for our fascination are as varied as there are these devices. Sometimes it is the anxiety to know what will happen to us and our friends in future while at other time it is just the curiosity to know what is happening to our friends right now.

I think with all the social networking sites around, we are in many ways very close to that the magic crystal ball. People are joining the social networking sites and are updating bits and pieces of information related to their personal life. I log into Orkut and I come to know that your friend just had a baby – thanks to the profile picture update. I log into Facebook – thanks to the mini feed and I come to know that my friend is dating this other friend. I log into Twitter and I come to know that my friend just finished having coffee at Starbucks. And on and on … so goes my gazing into the crystal ball.

As time goes on, more and more people will join the social network and these different sites will themselves evolve to talk to each other and soon enough we will be able to log in to this one uber website which will be – well let’s just call it the digital crystal ball.
