To comment or not to comment!

Is it important that your friends comment on your blog entry?

I think it is important because the blog entry becomes a true conversation only when your receive feedback in the form of comments. Without the feedback the blog entry is like a broadcast message and not a conversation!

What do you think?

  1. I think it is important and anywayz, I feel sad when people don’t have anything to say to my entries. :(

  2. okay now i feel good – knowing that i am not the only person having the same thought!

    Posted by iamneo | October 21, 2005, 3:43 pm
  3. Oh you are definitely not the only person. I actually get annoyed when people have comments disabled, I mean why should I read somebody’s entry and not have the oppurtunity to agree or disagree. People should make such entries private.

    Posted by luv_serendipity | October 21, 2005, 3:50 pm
  4. i agree to that too. i also find it annoying when blogs on other blog systems require you to have account with them. what ever happened to anonymous comments?

    Posted by iamneo | October 21, 2005, 3:53 pm
  5. Oh I have disabled that too or I actually I screen them. Its just that some immature people in this world will leave rude personal comments which have nothing to do with the entry and that I find completely irritating.

    Posted by luv_serendipity | October 21, 2005, 4:11 pm
  6. true that happens sometimes. but since you have the option to screen the comments, i think you can get away with letting people giving anonymous comments.

    Posted by iamneo | October 21, 2005, 4:13 pm
  7. Hmmm depends on the blog entry. Many of my entries are for my own record keeping and informing home what’s happening. So I don’t mind no replies.

    Posted by bhavanar | October 21, 2005, 4:13 pm
  8. then do you think there should be something that identifies blog entries which are for personal record keeping entries from those that require interactivity?

    Posted by iamneo | October 21, 2005, 4:17 pm
  9. Well good way to get feedback is to ask a question at the end like you did for this entry.

I know some people who’s smart way of making other people talk is to keep asking questions.

    Posted by bhavanar | October 21, 2005, 4:20 pm
  10. are you referring to me?

    Posted by iamneo | October 21, 2005, 4:25 pm
  11. this reply derailed my thought process. i was going to suggest if we could make use of the tag feature of LJ and have some way of presenting the entry as this entry requires comments and this one don’t!

    Posted by iamneo | October 21, 2005, 4:27 pm
  12. Hehe no man! You ask questions to perturb people LOL

    Posted by bhavanar | October 21, 2005, 4:42 pm
  13. You can require anon comments to be screened before showing up on your blog. That’s what I did after spending about a year on LJ. So far I haven’t had to reject any anon comment, IIRC.

  14. gottcha!

    Posted by iamneo | October 21, 2005, 4:43 pm
  15. Ummm there is a feature by which you can allow and block comments. So if there is a comment link people know you welcome comments.

Usually people don’t reply when they miss reading an entry/don’t have time/have nothing to say.
You can tag stuff but better option is to get the reader’s attention. If you really want comments on something make sure it’s not missed by people – catch their attention.

  16. me too!

  17. i guess it should as simple as – hey guys i need some comments here?

    Posted by iamneo | October 21, 2005, 4:50 pm
  18. Better make it

hey guys i need some comments here

    Posted by bhavanar | October 21, 2005, 4:51 pm
  19. ha ha ha ha! that surely catch attention. *laughing like crazy*

  24. I think, most of people like reading entries with more comments so they also like more comments on their blog. For me, quality of conversation is important, not the number.

I hate when some people keep on going about stupid things and make a long thread which entice others to read that all.

And I also don’t like people making too much entries daily and feeling up your friend’s page.

    Posted by maniyard | October 21, 2005, 5:34 pm
  25. I agree with feedback being crucial because you know you still have people interested in you and what you say out there. But again it depends on the kind of post like [info]bhavanar said. LJ gives a nice mechanism of logging stuff where email/webpage would have sufficed. You have both. I second [info]maniyard‘s points.

  26. Desirable but not mandatory.

(I know I shouldn’t have commented on this one but…) I believe it is quite important to get over that feeling/craving. That is, of course, personal. To repeat, I write because I want to write. So whether anyone comments or not, simply doesn’t affect me and my writings.

  27. Are you refering to someone? :)

    Posted by vivekm | October 22, 2005, 12:13 am
  28. are you refering to the self satisfaction one gets from seeing the amount of comments that a particular entry recieved when you wrote ‘feeling/craving’?

I like your point – one writes because one likes to write but what about the mode of journal entry. like for example – i like you entries from flickr – something like – picture of the day – whats the intend – do you just want to your friends to see what you want us to see – do you want some discussion about the context and the reasons why we should see your choice of the pciture of the day? wouldnt comments help in this case?

    Posted by iamneo | October 22, 2005, 12:20 am
  29. I also feel good when I get comments on my blog. :)

I think one likes more comments on blog as its indicator of more people care for you.

I also feel that if a blog is for some specific friends one should make it viewable for only those people.

    Posted by vivekm | October 22, 2005, 12:20 am
  30. i like both your points. i think people do take the number of comments as the some indicator of popularity simillar to the mutual friends count. i also agree that if you want an entry just for some friends then just make it view to these people but if thats the case why not send an email to those guys?

    Posted by iamneo | October 22, 2005, 12:22 am
  31. i agree with you about the importance of feedback because its then you get real feel of a ‘togetherness’ amongst your friends. i think its like this if you want to broadcast something simillar to putting things on notice board then website is good idea. emails are good when you need some form of confidentiallity. but i think the true power of blogs are when people comment because then it becomes something like the old days when we used to have discussion in the lobby during the evening break with a coffee and buscuit in hand :-)

    Posted by iamneo | October 22, 2005, 12:27 am
  32. here is my thoughts on your comment. if the comments are going out of hand and if it happens to your blog entry then you can control it. but its on someone else’s blog why does it bother you?

now about the huge friend’s page – i guess its a double edge sowrd – do you want more friends then you will get long pages. may be subscribing to the rss feeds will be a better idea if you have a lot of blog friends? what say?

    Posted by iamneo | October 22, 2005, 12:30 am
  33. I guess everyone knows that the word ‘blog’ or rather the original word ‘weblog’ is derived from ‘web’ + ‘log’. If you take the terms literally, then it’s something like an online diary of sorts (where people can comment on ur entries or not).

I wonder if commenting is allowed on Captain Picard’s log entry ;)

    Posted by anilash | October 22, 2005, 12:49 am
  34. are you refering to the self satisfaction…
    May be.

    whats the intend
Honestly… Very honestly… I thought of starting this series to give credits to the people whose pictures are liked by me. Apart from this, there are no intentions. Discussion? Context? Nope. Definitely not.

why we should see your choice
No compulsion. No anticipation. Forget flickr or any particular blog for that matter. Whatever I do on LJ has nothing to the ‘LJ friends’ I have. I don’t make entries keeping them in mind. In simple words, people in my that LJ friend list, don’t influence even by 1% of my writings on LJ.

    Posted by peeyush | October 22, 2005, 12:51 am
  35. I do use email for such purpose. But I think unification is reason. Blog for some stuff and email for some involves hassel. Also you want to archive everything at one place.

Its your journal which you are maintaining and you want to control access to your journal. You dont want everyone to read everypage, also not everyone will be interested in knowing about you.

Thats why I hate public blogs like…
    “I had dosa today.”
    “I saw a cat.”
    “Don’t know what to blog.”

    Posted by vivekm | October 22, 2005, 12:51 am
  36. thats a good point. i guess blog taken that way – as in log – its mean no need for comments. and therefore no comments on captain pciard’s logs. but like any thing else weblogs became blogs and somehow took on the avatar of logs, journals, diaries, bullentin boards, chat rooms, emails etc. some thing like an asynchronous active converstaion channel!

    Posted by iamneo | October 22, 2005, 12:53 am
  37. Read last statement as

In simple words, people in that LJ friend list of mine, don’t influence my writings on LJ.

    Posted by peeyush | October 22, 2005, 12:54 am
  38. i agree about blogs themed on those lines. but they are still conversation although may be not of our interest!

    Posted by iamneo | October 22, 2005, 12:55 am
  39. fair enough.

    Posted by iamneo | October 22, 2005, 12:56 am
  40. 39 comments on ‘whether to comment or not’!! Anyway, I think you could consider average number of comments per entry as your measure of happiness. So this one entry should keep you happy for quite a while, irrespective of whether the forthcoming entries get any comment or not!

    Posted by the_little_sasi | October 22, 2005, 1:25 am
  41. > but its on someone else’s blog why does it bother you?
Because it entice me to follow the comments of others. And after reading when you realize it was just a major time pass, I personally don’t feel good.

    >may be subscribing to the rss feeds will be a better idea if you have a lot of blog friends? what say?
I read only fresh entries (as I guess most of people) and when you have more friends and any of them is posting too much, you miss others. I am not in this situation yet. But I am sure bloggers like [info]bluesmood and maniyard | October 22, 2005, 2:30 am

  42. [info]code_martial have problems if they are using the way I use LJ. I wouldn’t like RSS for LJ since it wouldn’t say about comments (or does it??) and you can’t just not make it from the title. To read a post, length of the post and first few lines are important too to read.

PS: missed a ” in previous comment. You are getting numbers on your this entry because of all this, lol.

    Posted by maniyard | October 22, 2005, 2:32 am
  43. >I think one likes more comments on blog as its indicator of more people care for you.
I disagree. Number doesn’t say anything about your popularity. People judge you on what you say, not how much you say. Infact, lot’s off silly useless comments will make people form a bad opinion about you.

Remember, blogs are type of your log. So sometimes just to register a special event, etries like “I had dosa today” (if it was something special) is alright.

    Posted by maniyard | October 22, 2005, 2:52 am
  44. Actually in this case, you should consider a separate blog for your writings and link it to your blogs for friends. So we can follow both.

    Posted by maniyard | October 22, 2005, 2:54 am
  45. Is there any norm on what is to be blogged? Some people treat blogs as an online diary and others as a medium of informing others of events and info.

  46. The pic of the day funda is really cool and I am addicted to it. I look forward to them everyday. Your doing a good job man.

  47. And now do I really need to comment..
Btw, congratulations, this would be the post with max(comments) till now..

And yeah, people comment when they have something worth to say/share about your post, also they don’t comment when they feel your post has not triggered anything to comment.. this my personal opinion seeing the pattern of comments on my posts.. Also sometimes, they would think of returning back later to comment which never does happen..
